Pre-Move Preperation

Preparing for your big move ahead of time is crucial. Consider creating a moving checklist with a timeline. Write down all details that would require a particular date to accomplish including the following:

  • Schedule utility shutoffs and turn-ons at both your current and new homes.
  • Forward your mail to your new address and update your license and other necessary paperwork.
  • Confirm your closing date and arrange for a moving truck or hire professional movers. Many moving companies offer the option to hire additional help for loading and unloading.
  • Paint your new home BEFORE you move in.
  • Moving large furniture? Take measurements in advance to be confident they will fit in your new space.
  • Try to overlap your moving period to reduce the crunch time and stress.

Moving is the perfect time to say goodbye to those items in your home that are collecting dust. Create donation boxes or plan a yard sale to get rid of items you no longer need. This will reduce the amount of stuff to move and make unpacking much easier!

Now that your home is decluttered, you can start to stock up on moving supplies, such as boxes, packing tape, markers, and bubble wrap for fragile items. You may want to purchase extra supplies to avoid last-minute trips to the store.

Another important part of your move is planning out your route. Does the move require multiple trips? Think about where you are picking up your moving truck and how you will get from your current home to your new home. Keep in mind things like whether you need to drive on the highway, how many miles you’ll have to drive roundtrip, and include estimates for gas to fill the moving truck before returning it.

FBC Tip

Check the weather before your big moving day. Is it scheduled to rain? If you keep an eye on this in advance, you may be able to reschedule to avoid unwanted weather issues.

Packing Strategies

Pack Room by Room and Label Your Boxes

Pack one room at a time. You might want to start with the room you use the least, such as the basement or attic. Clearly label all your boxes with their contents and which room they belong in. On moving day, organize your boxes in the truck by room for an efficient unloading process.

Take Care with Fragile Items

Pack your fragile items with extra care. Use plenty of bubble wrap or packing paper, and clearly mark these boxes as “fragile.” If you have access to your new home before the big moving day, consider taking fragile items over in small loads. This can help you avoid any mishaps as you load furniture and other large or heavy items into the moving truck.

Make an Essentials Box

Pack an essentials box with items you will need right away in your new home. This might include toiletries, medications, pet food, phone charger, a change of clothes, basic kitchen items, and important documents.

FBC Tip

Make sure you have plenty of boxes, packing tape and markers on hand. Give yourself extra time during the packing process and avoid packing too heavily!

Moving Day

The big day is here! Ensure that everyone involved in the move knows the plan. Have a clear timeline and designate roles to avoid confusion. Prioritize safety on moving day. Lift heavy items properly, keep pathways clear, and stay hydrated. If you have children or pets, consider making arrangements for their care for the day. Not only will they be out of harms way, but it’ll reduce stress for both you and them.

Once you arrive and are unloaded, it’s a good idea to keep dinner simple on the first night. Order some takeout and pop the bubbly! It’s important to celebrate this milestone and relax after a busy day.

FBC Tip

Most moving companies offer furniture pads, dollies, tie-downs, and other helpful moving supplies for a small fee. Prevent scuffs and scrapes with proper preparation and tools!

Post-Move Organization

Before doing anything, clean your new home thoroughly before settling in. This includes wiping down surfaces, vacuuming and getting the carpets cleaned. Unpack one room at a time, starting with your essentials. Make sure all your utilities are set up and functioning. Double-check that everything is working correctly, from electricity to internet service. Now that you’re just about settled in, take time to personalize your new space. Hang up photos, arrange furniture, and add personal touches to make it feel like home.
